Viering will not run again
STERLING – Sterling’s first female mayor and current alderwoman-at-large will not seek a new term in office.
It’s time for new perspectives on the council, Amy Viering said this week.
She will continue her role at Sauk Valley Community College, where she is director of foundation and grants.
Viering was elected in 2003 as the Ward 3 alderwoman. She became mayor in 2007. In 2011, she decided not to run again for mayor.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and I was not able to devote as much time as I wanted to it,” Viering said in a March interview.
Two months later, Mayor Skip Lee appointed her alderwoman at large.
Viering has said she wants to see Sterling bounce back from the recession and “embrace new ideas.”
The filing period for the two aldermen-at-large positions opened Monday. So far, John Stauter and Christopher Schuchard have filed petitions to run.
The deadline to file petitions is 5 p.m. Monday. The election is April 9.
