STERLING – Leta R. Thome Cummings, 93, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
She was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Ohiowa, Neb., the daughter of Harry and Effie (Andrew) Johnson. She was married to Ralph Thome in 1942, until his death in 1986. She married Edmund Cummings in 1997, and he died in 2001.
During World War II, she served as a WAVE in the Navy, stationed at Pensacola, Fla.. In 2012, she was greatly honored to go to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight. Leta was a member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Rock Falls American Legion Post 902, and a member of Sterling Women of the Moose and Sterling-Rock Falls Ladies of the Elks.
She enjoyed golf and bowling, and loved to play cards, especially bridge. She traveled to all the continents but one, and wintered in Arizona.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy (Lowell) Grummert of Sterling; three stepdaughters, Cherie (Robert) Miller of Libertyville, Lynne Beth (Rick Chenowith) Cummings of Madison, Wis., and Patrice (Ed) Heckert of Sterling; grandchildren, Kathy (Gary) Sandrock of Rock Falls and Jay (Jackie) King of Rock Falls; Lowell’s children, Joni (Mike) Scanlan, Kelly (Colin) Reynolds, and Brian (Michelle) Grummert; a sister-in-law, Neva Johnson of Sterling; great-grandchildren, Zach, Faith, Jayce, Dalton, and Cody; 16 step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Leta also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Vada and Nellie; and four brothers, Glen, Raymond, Ira, and Donald.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, with the Rev. William Sullivan, pastor of New Life Lutheran Church, Sterling, officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
