VERNON HILLS (AP) — A 54-year-old who says he's dying from cancer is hospitalized and facing a felony charge after he was shot in the lobby of a suburban Chicago police department.

Vernon Hills investigators say an officer shot Howard Lazarus early Wednesday after the Mundelein man went to the department to report an accident. That's when he pulled a gun from his jacket pocket.

He's in fair condition after being shot once in the abdomen. A handwritten note in his pocket said he was dying from cancer and "couldn't do the deed" himself. It also apologized to officers.

Lazarus is facing a single count of aggravated assault.

A department spokeswoman says the weapon looked like a 9 mm semi-automatic, but was actually a BB gun.
