Praises those who serve in public office

Published: Saturday, April 27, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

I would like to issue a vote of confidence and thank you to all elected officials and candidates who offered their services to run for public office.

Those people donate their time and efforts to serve us, normally with no or small compensation. They subject themselves to becoming targets if anything goes wrong. The mayor and past mayors, city council and past city council; some I voted for and some I voted against. Thank you for volunteering and for serving.

It’s very easy to find fault and criticize and to call for resignations. I don’t hear the crowd volunteering to serve, and even fewer are qualified to do even half the jobs of those they want to replace. The more the crowd criticizes, the fewer good candidates will volunteer next election.

All elected officials are more than qualified to hold their positions. The weak link in the chain is the voter who didn’t research the candidates or failed to vote at all.

I may not agree with how money is spent in Dixon, but this council has done an excellent job of running Dixon. Mayor Burke, in particular, has done an excellent job of representing us, and I think he handled the “Rita” scandal with total professionalism. His ability to attract industry and develop Dixon should be praised.

It’s easy to bash. I suspect that most of our current elected officials won’t be re-elected. I just hope their replacements are qualified.

With the high demand of expectations, why would anyone want to be on the Dixon City Council? A fresh face doesn’t mean improved quality, only someone new to look at for 4 more years.
