Not the right way to decide on ‘conditions’

Published: Saturday, May 18, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Everyone knows that the current Lee County zoning ordinance for utility wind projects does not adequately protect the residents of this county.

It is preposterous for Board Chairman Ketchum to suddenly propose coming up with “conditions” that will reach a “compromise,” allowing the Green River Wind project to be constructed.

The purpose of zoning is to protect and preserve the public health, safety and welfare – not to compromise it.

Most likely, the undisclosed persons whom Mr. Ketchum is meeting with behind closed doors do not include any of the residents who will be impacted by the project.

While I agree that new conditions need to be set for wind projects in Lee County, this is not the proper way to do it.
