Odom checks into rehab
Lamar Odom checked into an undisclosed drug and alcohol rehabilitation center related to his recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Odom has not been charged in connection with his arrest Aug. 30 after he was spotted driving erratically on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.
Burke named Flames director of ops
Former Ducks General Manager Brian Burke was introduced as the Calgary Flames’ director of hockey operations Thursday.
Burke was the Ducks’ GM when they won the Stanley Cup in 2007, but he left in November of 2008 to be nearer to his children on the East Coast. He was named GM of the Maple Leafs later that month and kept his position until early this year, when he was ousted before the lockout ended and the shortened season began.
The Ducks hired Burke as a part-time scout in February.
Tribe turns up heat to change nickname
The Oneida Indian Nation is taking to the airwaves to pressure the Washington Redskins to dump their nickname.
The tribe, based in Central New York, announced Thursday it will launch an advertising campaign to urge the NFL franchise to shed a nickname frequently deemed offensive.
Eagles’ Cooper involved in kerfuffle
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper and cornerback Cary Williams were involved in a fight at practice Thursday that required several players to intervene.
Cooper sat out one-on-one drills after the dust-up, which made the rounds on the Internet after a recording of the fight surfaced. Williams was angrily swinging at Cooper, who was wearing a helmet.
Larranaga extended through ’22 at Miami
The University of Miami announced Thursday that Jim Larraņaga signed a contract extension that will keep him in Coral Gables through May 31, 2022.
The extension came after Miami’s historic run last season, which included the program’s first ACC regular season and tournament championships and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
