DCFS launches statewide anti-child abuse campaign

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is launching a new statewide campaign aimed at stopping child abuse and neglect.

The "You are Not Alone" campaign lets children know that help is available at DCFS' child abuse hotline. The department is asking all regional school superintendents and private school organizations to partner in the effort and distribute 25,000 posters to public and private schools across the state. The posters are available in both English and Spanish.

Department officials say one in five children are abused or neglected before the age of 18. It notes that 70 percent of child abuse goes unreported.

School officials are bound by Illinois law to notify DCFS if they fear a child is being abused.
