Prep basketaball: Games to watch for Week of Jan. 6-11

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 12:15 a.m. CST

Girls

Prophetstown (17-2) at Erie (10-5)

When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday

Where: Erie High School

Three Rivers North: Prophetstown 5-0; Erie 3-2

On the line: Prophets looking to take full control of TRAC North.

Players to watch: Courtney Cobert, Erie sr. G; Rachel Cobert, Erie so. F; Clare Kramer, Prophetstown jr. F; Laykin Miner, Erie sr. G; Corrie Reiley, Prophetstown jr. G; Karlie Stafford, Prophetstown sr. F

Outlook: The fact these schools co-op in some sports only adds to the rivalry when they hook up in hoops. The two girls teams have been strong the last few years, which has led to some classic matchups. Look for this one to stay close into the fourth quarter before the Prophets pull away.

SVM pick: Prophetstown

Boys

Dixon (12-2) at Ottawa (11-1)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Kingman Gym, Ottawa

NIB-12 West: Dixon 2-0; Ottawa 2-0

On the line: Both teams looking to wrest control of NIB-12 West.

Players to watch: Laron Carr,Dixon jr. G; John Carroll, Ottawa sr. F; Isaac Gassman, Ottawa so. G: Cal Jarrett, Dixon jr. G; Isaiah Roby, Dixon so. F; Cody Stokes, Ottawa sr. F

Outlook: The Pirates are coming off winning the Plano Christmas Classic. Ottawa is led by 6-foot, 5-inch center John Carroll. He'll be a load for the Dukes to stop. Dixon, which placed 10th at Plano, is looking to make a big statement in a tough place to win.

SVM pick: Ottawa

Boys

Newman (14-0) at Fulton (12-3)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Fulton High School

Three Rivers North: Newman 2-0, Fulton 2-0

On the line: Comets looking to remain unbeaten and atop TRAC North.

Players to watch: Zach Barber, Fulton jr. G; Matt Dail, Fulton sr. F; Nolan McGinn, Newman jr. F: John Payan, Newman sr. F; A.J. Sharp, Newman sr. G; Jake Willging, Fulton sr. F

Outlook: The Steamers can shoot with the best of them, and if they get hot from beyond the 3-point arc, they could make life tough on the Comets. Newman can shoot too, and when that's not falling, it will work the ball down to forward Noah McCarty for the tough points in the paint.

SVM pick: Newman

Girls

Eastland (14-3) at Galena (10-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Galena High School

NUIC West: Eastland 4-0; Galena 3-1

On the line: Cougars could pull two games ahead of Pirates in NUIC West.

Players to watch: Katie Furlong, Galena F; Hannah Hake, Eastland sr. F; Lexis Macomber, Eastland jr. F; Olivia Middendorf, G; Gabriela Salgado, Galena F; Courtney Walker, Eastland sr. G

Outlook: Two of the Cougars' three losses came at the Dixon tournament to bigger schools in Boylan and Sterling. Eastland will be tested by a solid group of girls from Galena, but if Eastland plays clean it should be able to upend the Pirates.

SVM pick: Eastland

Boys

Polo (15-1) at Aquin (11-3)

When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: Aquin H.S., Freeport

NUIC East: Polo 2-0; Aquin 2-0

On the line: Marcos, Bulldogs looking to keep pace with Milledgeville in NUIC East.

Players to watch: Brad Cavanaugh, Polo so. G; Brian Cavanaugh, Polo sr. G; Aiden Chang, Aquin jr. G; Krisean Coffee, Aquin so. F; AJ Dollmeyer, Polo sr. C; Andrew Martin, Aquin sr. G

Outlook: The Marcos beat the Bulldogs 77-59 in the third-place game at the Forreston tournament before Christmas. With conference position on the line, expect the Bulldogs to put up more of a fight. Polo is coming off a big win over Eastland at the Eastland tournament last week.

SVM pick: Polo
