It was good news to hear that Amboy softball coach Kelly Whitman was named 2014 Coach of the Year by this newspaper. She was very deserving of this coveted award that is not easy to achieve.
It is my opinion that Coach Kelly has been considered for this honor in the past. However, this is a tough honor to receive because the Sauk Valley area has many talented and successful softball coaches.
It was also good news that Amboy catcher, Kaitlyn Liebing, and pitcher, Karlee Doege, were named to the 2014 All-Area First Team. They both were very valuable to the success of the Amboy team. Both of them return with a good nucleus of players for the 2015 season.
There was a very “special” event that happened after the award ceremonies at the state tournament. Amboy easily had the most fan support at the tournament. All of us were assembled in right field for a picture with the team.
Pat Draper, a longtime Amboy area icon who rode to the game with me, was asked by Coach Kelly to get in the picture with the Amboy team. This was a “class act” by the coach and deeply honored by the 92-year-old Draper.
In closing, once again, I have to salute this paper for the outstanding sports coverage during the past school year. Easily, once again, the best in Illinois.
